China’s Domestic Box Office Sets New monthly Record in July

By last Friday (July 31st), the monthly domestic box office had passed 5.49 billion yuan (897.5 million U.S. dollars),making it the highest-grossing month ever in the history.  According to the authority, a total of 159 million people went to cinema last month and box-office revenue has totaled 25.85 billion yuan so far this year.

The top contributor was co-production live action animation Monster Hunt, which has already become the most selling Chinese film of all time in the domestic box-office, and its box-office is still growing. It is followed by the action feature Jian Bing Man and animated feature Monkey King: Hero is Back. All three of them took up 60 percent of the ticket sales in July.

It is estimated that the film earnings in China last month exceeded the yearly figure from 2002 to 2005 combined.
